Branch of the Kraków Museum in the Austrian Jugowice fort, with exhibitions on the history of the Kraków Fortress and on the history of Scouting.

Opening hoursAdmission 20 zł Partially accessible

About the museum

The branch is housed in Fort No. 52a, called Jugowice, which belongs to the Austrian fortifications of the Kraków Fortress and lies in the south of the city on ulica Forteczna. The former rooms of the fort, including the quarters for the garrison, a dressing station, the artillery emergency room between the armoured turrets and the ammunition stores in the eastern combat block, have been preserved in their original form as far as possible.

The permanent exhibition “Fort Jugowice. Dziedzictwo miejsca” tells the story and traditions of southern Kraków, the origins and architecture of the fortress, the Austro-Hungarian soldiers and everyday life in peace and war. Visitors see a model of the fort, a room on the fortress's part in the First World War, the artillery emergency room, the commandant's room and the ammunition stores. One room is devoted to the civilian heritage of District X, including the sulphur heritage of Swoszowice. For the youngest visitors there is a trail with the cat Jacek.

The second permanent exhibition is “Harcerskie ścieżki” (“Scouting Paths”), prepared by the Polish Scouting Association (Związek Harcerstwa Polskiego) and the Association of Scouts of the Republic of Poland (Związek Harcerstwa Rzeczypospolitej) in cooperation with the Kraków Museum. It presents the history of Scouting from the beginning of the 20th century to the present: an expedition around the world in a Ford T, a life-size bison as the symbol of the 1935 Jamboree in Spała, Scouting's clandestine activity during the Second World War, the revival of the movement in the People's Republic of Poland, the balloon basket of the Scout air units, and an interactive game with knots and ciphers.
