About the museum
The Regional Museum in Bestwina was established in 1993 by decision of the Commune Council, in place of the Regional Memorial Room (Regionalna Izba Pamięci). The impetus for its creation came from the Society of Friends of the Bestwina Land (Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Bestwińskiej), founded in 1992. The museum bears the name of Fr. Zygmunt Bubak, is housed in the former school building at ul. Kościelna 57 and operates within the Municipal Culture Centre in Bestwina.
Visitors enter the Józefkowa izba (Józefka’s Room), a reconstructed 19th-century village cottage with a stove, crockery, a table and benches, and the “piykno izba” (“beautiful room”) with a bed, a chest of drawers, a small altar and a cupboard full of old costumes from Bestwina. The carriage house contains vehicles from the 19th and 20th centuries, including a kolasa (ceremonial carriage) and a szrombek (sleigh), as well as harness elements. A separate room shows the oldest farm tools, and the museum also has beekeeping, shoemaking and weaving equipment, an old loom and an exhibition of sacred art.
The village history room presents the history of Bestwina from earliest times: 13th-century excavations, the Księga Jurysdykcji Państwa Bestwińskiego (Book of Jurisdiction of the Bestwina State) and an 18th-century deed by which a peasant bought his way out of serfdom, as well as portraits of distinguished residents. Next to the museum are the Galeria “Na Prowincji” (gallery) and the Książnica Regionalna (regional library). For groups, the museum runs lessons and workshops, for example baking bread in a peasant cottage.
