About the museum
The first attempts to organise a museum in Krasnystaw were made in 1930 by the editor and teacher Józef Nikodem Kłosowski, who encouraged residents to donate souvenirs. The collection was scattered during the Second World War. A breakthrough came in 1957 thanks to the regional historian Zygmunt Tokarzewski; the first exhibition was opened on 30 April 1958.
The museum is housed in the Jesuit college next to the church of St Francis Xavier, built in 1695–1740. Initially it occupied a single room, and later it received others. The collections number around 10 thousand exhibits in the departments of archaeology, numismatics, early art, ethnography, and hop growing and brewing.
The permanent exhibitions show, among other things, the prehistory of Krasnegostaw and its surroundings, the history of the town from the 14th to the 20th century, the most interesting archaeological discoveries, the material culture of the village, reconstructions of a smithy and a manor kitchen, a Polish portrait, and applied arts.
