About the museum
The museum was founded in 1926 on the initiative of Zygmunt Klukowski as the Muzeum Ziemi Zamojskiej (Museum of the Zamość Land). It was closed in 1933, resumed activity in 1936 as the Muzeum Krajoznawcze (Museum of Regional Studies) and survived the war thanks to Władysław Kabat. In 1950 the state took it over, and since 1999 it has borne its present name, Muzeum Zamojskie.
The seat is a complex of 17th-century burghers’ tenement houses on the Rynek Wielki, formerly belonging to Armenians who had settled in Zamość from 1585 under a privilege of Jan Zamoyski. Original elements of the interiors and facades have been preserved.
The exhibitions cover the archaeology and prehistory of the Zamość region, the folk art of the region, and the history of Zamość, the Zamoyski family and the Zamoyski Entail (Ordynacja Zamojska) in the years 1580–1939. The museum also includes the Muzeum Fortyfikacji i Broni “Arsenał” (Arsenal Museum of Fortifications and Weapons), an exhibition on the Zamość Academy, the Gallery of Sculpture of Prof. Marian Konieczny and the Rotunda Zamojska.
