About the museum
The Chełm Land Museum was established in 1919 and is a local-government cultural institution of the City of Chełm. It collects monuments in the fields of archaeology, ethnography, history, art and natural history. It currently operates in four buildings in the town centre: the former Piarist college, the building of the former printing house “Zwierciadło”, a burgher tenement house, and the former Uniate church of St Nicholas. Three of them stand on ul. Lubelska, and the fourth, at ul. św. Mikołaja, is a few minutes’ walk away.
Visitors can buy a ticket for one building or a pass for all the exhibitions, and start the visit anywhere. A tour of the whole takes about three hours, and the total walk between the buildings comes to roughly one kilometre.
The permanent exhibitions present, among other things, the history of Chełm from the 10th to the 20th century, the traditional culture of the Chełm region based on archaeological and ethnographic monuments, and the nature of the eastern Lublin Region. In addition, in the cellars of the tenement house at ul. Reformacka 27, the exhibition “Chełmska bezpieka i jej ofiary” (The Chełm Security Service and Its Victims) can be seen on request.
