About the museum

The original arsenal stood within the wall around the palace of Jan Zamoyski and was built in 1582–1583 to a design by Bernardo Morando; it served not only as a weapons store but also as a place to display the Zamoyski weapons collection. The present building was erected in the 1630s, probably to a design by Andrea dell’Aqua, as a weapons store for the town and for the Zamoyski Entail (Ordynacja Zamojska).

After the fortress was dismantled in 1866, the building served, among other things, as a warehouse, a school and an industrial plant, and then gradually fell into disrepair. In 1976–1980 it underwent thorough restoration, and in September 1980 the Museum of Colours and Arms “Arsenał” opened there. In autumn 2010 the museum closed, and after more than four years it reopened as the Museum of Fortifications and Weapons “Arsenał”, a branch of the Zamość Museum.

Visitors can see a multimedia presentation on the history of the fortress and the town of Zamość in the Powder Magazine (Prochownia), a permanent exhibition on the Zamość arsenal from the 16th to the 19th century in the Arsenal building, and an exhibition on the Zamość region and the development of military technology in the 20th century in the Pavilion under the Curtain (Pawilon pod Kurtyną).
