About the museum
The museum was founded on the initiative of Andrzej Wajda and opened in 1994 as the Centre of Japanese Art and Technology Manggha. For the first ten years it was a branch of the National Museum in Kraków; in 2005 it gained the status of an independent state cultural institution, and since 2007 it has operated as a museum institution.
The building was designed by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki in cooperation with Kraków architects. The construction funds came from the Kyoto–Kraków Foundation, which Wajda established with the Kyoto Prize award, and from a fundraising campaign also conducted in Japan.
The idea of the museum was to create a home for the collection of Japanese art of Feliks “Manggha” Jasieński, which he donated to the National Museum in Kraków in 1920. In 2009 the collections of Far Eastern art were deposited at Manggha. The museum is the only state institution in Poland promoting Japanese culture; it runs exhibitions, events and a Japanese Language School (Szkoła Języka Japońskiego).

Toilets for people with disabilities are in both buildings; in the main building they have a small turning space, in the gallery a comfortable one. There is one marked parking space for people with disabilities in the car park. The museum has no induction loops.
