About the museum
The castle of the Pomesanian chapter in Kwidzyn was built in the first half of the 14th century as a four-winged castle with towers at the corners and a two-storey cloister in the courtyard. In a second phase of construction it was connected to the neighbouring cathedral, and a main tower, the belfry, was erected. Together with the bishop’s castle, the cathedral and the town, it formed a unique defensive complex, and the castle was the seat of the chapter and a religious and administrative centre.
In 1478 the building was seriously damaged during fighting. After 1526 the Pomesanian bishops converted to Protestantism, and from 1551 the castle served the officials of Duke Albert Hohenzollern. In 1709 Tsar Peter I stayed here. At the end of the 18th century two wings were demolished, and from 1874 a reconstruction was carried out under the direction of Gustav Reichert. Until 1935 it housed a court and a prison, and from 1936 to 1945 a school of the Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend).
The museum in the castle opened on 20 November 1950, and since 1973 it has been a branch of the Malbork Castle Museum. Its displays included applied arts and paintings from the Sierakowski collection in Waplewo, as well as temporary exhibitions in the dormitory. From 30 August 2026 the castle has been closed to visitors because of a comprehensive renovation lasting about three years, financed from the FEnIKS programme. The exhibitions have been dismantled, and reopening with five new exhibitions has been announced for 2030.
