About the museum

The Muzeum Pożarnictwa Ziemi Pomorskiej w Łasinie (Fire Service Museum of the Pomeranian Land in Łasin) has been operating since 1976. It was founded on the initiative of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade (OSP) and is housed in the brigade’s headquarters at the junction of ul. Kościelna and ul. Odrodzenia Polski. The first curator was Franciszek Hinz, to whom the restoration of the unique equipment is owed. Today the museum is looked after by the president of the OSP, and its upkeep is financially supported by the gmina of Łasin.

The collection includes fire pumps on wooden wheels from 1885–1915, a fifteen-metre ladder made to order by a local craftsman in 1897, and motor pumps from the interwar period. Small equipment of former firefighters is also on display: helmets, uniforms, rogatywka caps, axes and boat hooks (bosaki), as well as an alarm device (bekadło), a Y-piece (trójnik) and a branch nozzle (prądownica). A rich collection of photographs, including interwar ones, documents the changes in the brigade’s activities.

Visitors learn that firefighting traditions in Łasin go back to the middle of the 19th century. A document from 1863 shows that one of the fire pumps was crewed by thirty residents, and in 1884 a volunteer fire brigade replaced the compulsory fire service. On the grounds of the OSP stands a historic water tower from 1893, decorated with a figure of St Florian.
