About the museum
The beginnings of the collections go back to the 1970s, when collectors began to gather memorabilia of fishing and boatbuilding on the Vistula Lagoon: fishing boats of the barkas and żakówka types, and tools from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the equipment of the boatbuilding workshop of the Schmidt family from Łaszka near Sztutowo.
In 2002 the Central Maritime Museum in Gdańsk and the board of the gmina of Sztutowo organised, in the barracks of former shipyard workshops in Kąty Rybackie, a seasonal exhibition on the history of fishing and boatbuilding on the Vistula Lagoon. The exhibition received the “Sybilla” award of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, and in 2003 the museum won a second “Sybilla” for an exhibition devoted to the historic boatbuilding workshop from Łaszka.
In 2007 the Minister of Culture and National Heritage granted the institution the status of a branch of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk, which still applies. The permanent exhibition presents traditional boats, boatbuilding tools, rope-making machines and the recollections of former fishermen; it is currently housed in the hall of a former workshop.
