About the museum
The Frombork Cathedral Complex is a medieval defensive and sacred ensemble built on a hill above the Vistula Lagoon. It comprises the archcathedral basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Andrew the Apostle, built in 1329–1388, and the surrounding buildings and defensive walls with towers and gates. In the cathedral lies the tomb of Mikołaj Kopernik, canon of the Warmian Cathedral Chapter, who wrote the work “On the Revolutions” (De revolutionibus) in Frombork. The complex has been entered on the list of Monuments of History.
The Monument of History Museum “Frombork – Zespół Katedralny” is responsible for making these sites accessible to visitors. The Archdiocese of Warmia carried out the conservation and restoration of selected objects of the complex, together with their adaptation to the needs of people with disabilities, and in recent years the cathedral treasury (since 2023) and the cathedral attic, among other sites, have been opened to visitors.
Open to visitors are: the basilica with the Gothic Frombork polyptych from 1504, the organ and Kopernik’s tomb; Radziejowski’s Tower with its observation terrace and Foucault pendulum; the treasury; the attic with its original roof truss; and the New Bishop’s Palace with a collection of white tiled stoves from 1844–1845. The former stables house the Wozownia Sztuk (art carriage house), with a gallery and studios.
