About the museum

The building at ul. Kopernika 17 in Nowy Dwór Gdański was built as a dairy and cheese-making plant. In 1890 it was founded on the site of former post-horse stables by Leonhard Krieg, a dairyman of Swiss origin. In 1892 the plant was rebuilt as a model cooling dairy, and after a large fire in 1902 it was extended and the main building was erected, which stands to this day. After the Second World War the facility served as a store for Soviet troops, and later as the seat of a rural transport cooperative and a warehouse of an agricultural cooperative.

The Muzeum Żuławskie (Żuławy Museum) was founded in 1993 and officially opened on 11 June 1994. In 2009–2011 the municipality of Nowy Dwór Gdański carried out a thorough renovation of the historic building, co-financed from European Union funds. The work covered the roof, the reconstruction of historic window and door openings, new installations, underfloor heating and the development of the surroundings. The Żuławski Park Historyczny (Żuławy Historical Park) was formally established on 1 May 2011, and the operator of the building became the Klub Nowodworski.

The park presents the most valuable monuments of the region, organises scientific conferences, publishes material on the culture of Żuławy, and supports local products and tourism. The building has three floors of museum exhibitions, a seminar room and workshop studios. A branch of the museum is the lapidarium “Cmentarz 11 wsi” (Cemetery of the 11 Villages) in Żelichowo-Cyganek.
