About the museum
The Museum of the Braniewo Land was officially opened on 3 September 2016 on the initiative of local activists and members of the Towarzystwo Miłośników Braniewa (Society of Friends of Braniewo). The core of the collections was the collection of the Braniewo Historical Society “Baszta” and donations from residents. The museum is run socially by the society, and its seat is the former Jesuit College, the Liceum Hosianum.
Braniewo already had a museum earlier: in 1880 Prof. Wilhelm Weißbrodt founded the Das Antik-Archäologische Kabinett at the Liceum Hosianum, one of the oldest museums in East Prussia. Its collection numbered over 1,250 items, including about 140 stone inscriptions. The institution existed until the Second World War; in 1945 the buildings holding the collections were destroyed, and for decades the town had no museum of its own.
The museum now occupies further adapted rooms of the Hosianum and the adjoining medieval four-storey Klesz Tower. In 2017 it opened, among others, the exhibitions “Braniewo – a Port Town from the Mid-14th to the Mid-20th Century”, “Structural and Decorative Building Ceramics” and “On the Eve of the Great War 1409–1410”, with knightly armour and the Braniewo banner. The museum also organises regular Thursday meetings devoted to history and conferences.
