About the museum

The History of Medicine Department of the Mikołaj Kopernik Museum is housed in the Holy Spirit post-hospital complex at ul. Stara. The hospital building, together with the Gothic chapel of St Anne, dates from the first half of the 15th century and was built in stages. It is the only monument of hospital architecture in Poland that has survived in an unchanged form since the end of the 17th century.

After being rebuilt from ruins, the complex has been used by the museum since 1989, which presents monuments from the history of medicine here. Numerous temporary exhibitions devoted to death, illness and the body are also organised, such as displays on pharmacy vessels, the development of anatomy, surgery and gynaecology in the modern era, or the art of portraying the dead.

Right next to the hospital is a herb garden (herbularius) open to visitors, and the reception has a museum shop with souvenirs and publications. The department belongs to the Mikołaj Kopernik Museum in Frombork, an institution of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship self-government.
