About the museum
The Museum and Memorial Site in Sobibór is located on the grounds of the German Nazi extermination camp, which operated in 1942–1943 as part of “Reinhardt”, a large-scale plan to exterminate the Jewish population in occupied Europe. In October 1943 a prisoners’ uprising broke out in the camp, after which it ceased to function.
The memorial site is run as a branch of the State Museum at Majdanek. On the grounds of the former camp there is a new memorial area with the Polana Mogił (Meadow of Graves), and a museum building with an information point and sales of publications, an exhibition hall and an education room.
The permanent exhibition “SS-Sonderkommando Sobibor. Niemiecki obóz zagłady 1942–1943”, opened on 29 October 2020, presents the realities of the camp’s operation on sixteen thematic panels. It shows almost a hundred photographs and documents, the accounts of survivors, the names of victims and personal objects found during archaeological work.
