About the museum

The idea of a museum in Szprotawa arose in 2002, together with the founding of the Towarzystwo Bory Dolnośląskie. The first exhibits were collected in temporary premises, and the breakthrough came in autumn 2003, when the historic Brama Żagańska was taken over from the municipality. The museum opened on 18 June 2004, and since 2005 it has been named after Dr Felix Matuszkiewicz (1885–1956), a historian from Szprotawa and founder of the town’s first museum, which existed until 1945.

The museum is run by the Towarzystwo Bory Dolnośląskie, and its staff largely work on a voluntary basis. It carries out tasks entrusted to it by the municipality, such as protecting and promoting local heritage, regional and environmental education, and tourist information. It has four departments: archives, archaeology and history, natural history, and tourism. It is the only museum of its kind in the Bory Dolnośląskie region.

Among its most valuable collections are a 16th-century kord (a type of sword) from Szprotawa, the oldest town chronicle, dating from the 18th century, a chest belonging to the Szprotawa carpenters’ guild, a 15th-century stone projectile and Lusatian culture urns. The exhibition is today displayed in the former Magdalenek convent, in the Galeria Zbiorów Regionalnych (Regional Collections Gallery), while the storage and workshop are located in the Brama Żagańska.
