About the museum
The beginnings of Polish museum work in Nowa Sól go back to 1946 and are linked to the activity of Aleksander Fudalej and the Society of Friends of the Museum. The surviving holdings of the pre-war Heimatmuseum were secured at that time, and the museum opened on 3 May 1947 at ul. Witosa. In 1948 it was moved to a former factory owner’s villa at ul. Muzealna, where it is still housed today, and in 1949 it was nationalised.
The numismatic interests of the first head of the museum resulted in a coin collection and, from 1963, a series of numismatic sessions, which were of international character until 2013. In the 1960s one of the outbuildings was converted for exhibition purposes, and in 1985 a nature pavilion was set up in it. Since 1990 the museum has been run by the local government and has borne the name Muzeum Miejskie (Municipal Museum). In 2014–2015 the buildings were thermally modernised and renovated.
Today the institution presents permanent exhibitions: Burgher Interiors, Militaria, Nowa Sól – Origins, Town Charter, Development, Nature of the Oder Valley and, from 2025, a separate exhibition of salt cellars with around 350 spice containers. Each year it also organises several temporary exhibitions, museum lessons, workshops and Museum Night (Noc Muzeów).
