About the museum

The manor house in Szyba, a village in the gmina of Nowe Miasteczko, was built in 1797 as a landed estate residence; the date of completion is preserved on the entrance portal. After the Second World War the state took over the building, where the office of the village people’s council and flats were housed, and when the ceilings began to collapse it was abandoned. In 1987 the Jachimowicz family from Nowa Sól bought it and carried out a thorough restoration of the ruin.

In the manor house, the owner, a regionalist and organ builder, Wojciech Jachimowicz, set up a home museum of musical instruments, established in 1997. The permanent exhibition is housed in one of the manor’s rooms, and temporary exhibitions are shown in the hall. The collections number over 3,000 exhibits and fall into three strands: parts of church organs, instruments from various countries and objects related to music.

The museum room contains, among others, three pianos, including an instrument by Erard of Paris, two table pianos from the late 18th century and a fisharmonica that belonged to a hermit from the village of Jakubowo. A separate group consists of wooden and metal organ pipes, wind chests and plates from organs that no longer exist, as well as gramophones, a phonograph, an old reporter’s tape recorder and memorabilia of the brass band from Nowa Sól. The collections have also been shown at exhibitions in other Polish cities. Plein-air painting and photography sessions take place at the manor.
