About the museum
The Olecka Izba Historyczna (Olecko Historical Room) opened on 24 July 2010, on the 450th anniversary of the founding of the town. Its aim is to document, collect and disseminate knowledge about the history of Olecko (Marggrabowa from 1560 to 1927, Treuburg from 1928 to 1945). Its first seat was at Plac Wolności 1; it now operates on the second floor of the Regionalny Ośrodek Kultury “Mazury Garbate” (Regional Culture Centre “Mazury Garbate”), of which it is a unit.
The permanent exhibition traces the history of the town from the granting of town rights in 1560 to the present day. It shows a copy of the deed of sale of the land on which Olecko was built, a copy of the charter, a hymnal (kancjonał), photographs of the furnishings of the Evangelical church, views of the town destroyed during the First World War, a wall map of Olecko County and postcards from the early 20th century. A display case with objects left after 1945 symbolically closes the history of Treuburg.
The second part of the exhibition covers the post-war period: maps from 1945, documents of Polish settlers and the rebuilding of the town. The room also commemorates prominent residents, including Jan Karol Sembrzycki, Ernst Jäger and Grażyna Dobreńko. Meetings on the history of the town and region are held once a month.
