About the museum
The Augustów Land Museum has operated since 1973 as part of the Augustów Cultural Institutions. Its collections include 1,463 museum items, of which 808 are ethnographic, as well as 16 deposits. The most valuable are a document from 1792 confirming the rights of the suburb dwellers of Augustów, signed by King Stanisław August Poniatowski, and a folder of manuscripts with notes by Ignacy Prądzyński from 1823–1824.
The institution conducts popular-science and educational activities, cooperates with schools (museum lessons and competitions) and with the museums of the region. It collects a regional library, press documentation, views of Augustów and its surroundings, and materials on the Augustów Canal.
The Ethnographic Department is at ul. Hoża 7. The Department of the History of the Augustów Canal, a separate canal museum, operates in the building at ul. 29 Listopada 5a and is open in season from 15 May to 15 September; outside the season, visits are possible by prior arrangement.
