About the museum
The beginnings of the Muzeum Ziemi Gołdapskiej go back to 1962, when the young geographer Mieczysław Ratasiewicz started work at Primary School No. 1 in Gołdap and began documenting changes in the region. Together with a group of children and young people, he collected wartime, pre-war, historical and ethnographic souvenirs. After years of moving from place to place, the collection finally found a permanent home.
The museum has been in its current location since 26 February 2008, and it was named after Ratasiewicz in 2010. It is housed in two twin buildings of former military barracks, more than a hundred years old. It is a regional museum (izba regionalna) within the structure of the Public Library in Gołdap.
One building holds the permanent exhibition; the other is used for temporary exhibitions and museum lessons. The permanent exhibition consists mainly of ethnographic, historical and geological exhibits and militaria; the collections number around 8 thousand objects. The museum also hosts concerts, meetings and the annual Easter fair “Jajeczko z rzeżuszką”.
