About the museum
The Open Museum of the Oder is run by the Open Museum of Technology Foundation (FOMT), founded in the mid-1990s on the initiative of entrepreneurs, university rectors and history enthusiasts. The nucleus of the museum was the steam tug “Nadbór”, built in the second half of the 1940s, which towed barges along the canalised Oder. After its service ended the vessel was used, among other things, as a boiler house; an unsuccessful attempt to convert it into an icebreaker was made in 1982. From 1998 the tug was restored, and it was opened to visitors in the same year.
Other historic vessels joined the “Nadbór”. The floating crane “Wróblin” was built in 1938–1939 at the shipyard in Fürstenberg an der Oder, and the foundation bought it in 2003. The steel, riveted barge “Irena” from 1936 came to the foundation in 2004 and is to become a centre for the interpretation of technical heritage in the future. All three vessels are entered in the register of monuments.
The ships are moored at the Szczytniki Lock, opposite the main building of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Visitors can see the original interiors, including the tug’s boiler room and engine room. The museum is also a place of meetings, events and education about the heritage of the Oder.
