About the museum
In 1943, when Allied bombers were destroying German industry, Germany moved armaments plants to safer areas. Kamienna Góra, then Landeshut, was among the places chosen, where an engineering department of the aircraft company Arado Flugzeugwerke, which designed jet aircraft, was set up. The new seat was established in former weaving mills and placed under secrecy, and a network of underground corridors and shelters was built beneath the town.
The underground tourist route has operated since 2012. It was created not only on the basis of documents, but also on the testimony of people who worked for the Arado company, including forced labourers. The guides reach the last living witnesses of the Second World War and preserve their stories.
The exhibition includes more than a hundred authentic exhibits, among them aviation armaments, remains of the Enigma cipher machine, parts of German V1 and V2 weapons, a 280 mm Nebelwerfer rocket, original rifles and soldiers’ equipment, and a model of the Arado E.555 aircraft. The tour lasts about an hour and runs along a route about one kilometre long. The guides wear period costumes and tell the story as an adventure.
