About the museum
The collection began to take shape at the end of the 1960s. In the 1970s, owners of old, non-working vehicles were fined for neglected properties, so many cars ended up as scrap or were sold abroad. Enthusiasts saved some of them, keeping them in backyards, gardens, attics and cellars until they could be restored. The great demand for historic cars in films made in the People’s Republic of Poland (PRL) also made it possible to begin restoring them.
Drawing on private collections, and with the support of the Warsaw Automobile Club and the Polish Motor Union, the Museum of Motoring and Technology in Otrębusy near Warsaw was officially opened in 1995. Today the collection numbers several hundred historic vehicles, among them those of particular importance for Polish history and for prominent figures in public life and culture. There are passenger and commercial cars, buses, bicycles, motorcycles, prams and also working tanks.
The museum also displays props from the period, including gramophones, furniture and office equipment from the 1920s and 1930s, old petrol stations and souvenirs from the PRL era. The vehicles are restored in accordance with the rules that applied when they were made. Vehicles and props from the museum have featured many times in Polish and foreign film productions.
