About the museum
The Muzeum Dulag 121 opened on 1 October 2010 as a local government cultural institution of the Pruszków district. It is housed in a purpose-built pavilion at ul. 3 Maja 8a, on the edge of the former railway workshops in Pruszków, where in 1944 the German occupation authorities set up the Durchgangslager 121 transit camp. People expelled from Warsaw during and after the Warsaw Uprising passed through it.
The first memorial plaque was unveiled in 1947 on the initiative of residents, veterans and railway workers, and a monument by Oskar Hansen was erected in 1990. The museum has a narrative character: the central part of the exhibition consists of accounts by former prisoners and by people who helped in the camp, supplemented by photographs, letters, documents and souvenirs, as well as historical commentary covering the period from the Warsaw Uprising to early 1945.
The exhibition has five parts: the Warsaw Uprising, the expulsion of the city’s residents, the functioning of the camp, aid for prisoners and the final period of its existence. Among the displays are a model of the camp at a scale of 1:160 from 2012, replicas of camp elements and more than forty original audio recordings of prisoners, added in 2020. The museum also organises exhibitions, concerts, lectures, film screenings and meetings, works with schools and runs educational and publishing activities.
