About the museum
The Archaeological Reserve in Będkowice protects an early medieval settlement complex of the Ślężanie, used from the 8th to the 13th century, located about 3 km from Sobótka at the foot of Ślęża. The reserve was established in the 1970s or 1980s (sources give 1975 and 1986), and the protected area covers about 50 ha. According to descriptions, the complex may have served as a centre of pagan worship.
The most important elements are an oval stronghold measuring 65 by 75 m, with a rampart up to 1.5 m high and a dry moat, and a burial mound cemetery from the 8th–9th century, in which some of the mounds have been re-created and fenced off. There is also a small cult circle made of amphibolite, a causeway with a medieval pond, and traces of a settlement.
Within the reserve, reconstructed log huts and a well have been put on display, and at the entrance stands a palisade gate with wooden figures of warriors from the Piast period. Shelters and information boards tell the story of the Ślężanie, and two archaeological trails run through the site.
