About the museum
The Skansen in Chabówka was established on the site of a locomotive shed founded at the end of the 19th century. At the peak of its prosperity about 80 steam locomotives were based here, serving freight and passenger trains to Kraków, Nowy Sącz and Zakopane. The open-air museum opened in June 1993.
The collection numbers more than a hundred historic vehicles and is the largest in Poland. Visitors can see steam, diesel and electric locomotives, freight and passenger carriages, snowploughs, rail trolleys (drezyny) and railway cranes. Since 2004 the open-air museum has organised public train rides with steam locomotives, and since 2005 the Parowozjada (Steam Locomotive Parade), a parade of working historic locomotives, has been held every August.
The facility belonged to the structure of PKP Cargo. In 2026 it was announced that care of it would be taken over by a new foundation, Fundacja Parowozownia Chabówka, established by PKP S.A. and PKP Intercity, and the facility is to operate under the name Parowozownia Chabówka.
