About the museum

The Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar aims to conserve, study and promote the work of the artist Júlio Pomar (Lisbon, 1926–2018) and to encourage critical reflection on contemporary art and culture. The venue presents exhibitions devoted to Pomar’s work and to other national and international artists, and it organises lectures, talks with artists and publications.

The building, on Rua do Vale, is a former warehouse bought in 2000 by Lisbon City Council to serve as a studio for Júlio Pomar, who lived on the same street. The renovation project is by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, Pritzker Prize laureate 1992. The works lasted several years and, in 2010, the artist gave up using the space as a studio, which made it possible to bring forward its opening as a museum. The name Atelier-Museu recalls that original purpose.

The museum opened in 2013 and, since 2 January 2015, has been part of the network of cultural venues run by EGEAC. The building has two floors, with a central exhibition hall, storerooms, a reception and an outdoor courtyard through which the entrance is reached. It also has an auditorium with 60 seats.
