About the museum
The Casa da Arquitetura – Centro Português de Arquitetura (Portuguese Centre of Architecture) was founded in 2007 as a non-profit cultural association, to promote architecture in Portugal and abroad and to receive, process and make accessible the archives of architects. It first occupied the house of Álvaro Siza's family, on Rua Roberto Ivens in Matosinhos, remodelled by Siza in 1961 and opened as the Casa da Arquitetura on 25 June 2009.
In 2017 it moved to the Quarteirão da Real Vinícola (Real Vinícola block), also in Matosinhos, between the Avenida Menéres and the streets Mouzinho de Albuquerque, Sousa Aroso and D. João I. The restored buildings were part of the factory built between 1897 and 1901 by Menéres & Companhia for the Real Companhia Vinícola, a building in the British style, where the region's first steam-powered cooperage operated. The complex was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 2013.
The institution holds an archive and a library of architecture and organises exhibitions, lectures, workshops and architecture trails. It also has a shop and a gallery.
