About the museum
The exhibition with which the Serralves Foundation marked the centenary of Manoel de Oliveira in 2008 gave rise to the Casa do Cinema. On 20 April 2009 the filmmaker and the Foundation signed a deposit agreement that brought to the museum the extraordinary documentary collection assembled by Oliveira over more than eighty years. That document set out the general lines of the future house.
The architect Álvaro Siza was invited to design a new building within the Serralves estate, and António Preto was tasked with drawing up the museum programme. The project was presented publicly on 15 November 2013, the date of a second agreement that set the objectives, the way it would operate and the house's place within the structure of the Foundation. Construction began in January 2018, and the Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira opened on 24 June 2019. In 2020 the building received the Prémio do Imobiliário in the rehabilitation and reconstruction category.
The house brings together a permanent exhibition, a documentation centre and film screenings that give regular access to Oliveira's work. It also presents temporary exhibitions, thematic and monographic film cycles, retrospectives, lectures, publications and educational programmes. In conjunction with the Museu de Arte Contemporânea, it reflects on how moving images pass between the gallery and the cinema hall.
