About the museum
The Serralves Foundation was created in 1989, and the Museum of Contemporary Art is its main cultural institution. The building was designed by the architect Álvaro Siza, work starting in 1991, and the museum opened in 1999, integrated into the surroundings of the gardens, the Park and the Casa de Serralves. The building was conceived to adapt to the diversity and unpredictability of the contemporary art shown there.
The same ticket gives access to the museum and the Álvaro Siza Wing, the Serralves Park, the Treetop Walk, the Casa de Serralves and the Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira. The Casa de Serralves is an example of 20th-century Art Deco architecture of the 1930s, with contributions by names such as Marques da Silva, Charles Siclis, Ruhlmann, Lalique and Edgar Brandt, and was the residence of Count Carlos Alberto Cabral.
The Foundation has a contemporary art collection, an education service, a library and a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, performing arts, film and talks, with a programme of touring shows from the collection.
