About the museum

The Casa da Vivência Judaica was created as an interpretation and museum space to preserve, promote and make known the medieval Jewish and New Christian heritage in the municipality of Gouveia. It tells the town's urban development through the historical narratives of these communities and the marks they left on the urban fabric. It operates in an adjoining building in the historic centre, donated to the municipality, whose rehabilitation included a public walkway, as part of an urban regeneration and cultural tourism project. It was presented on 1 February 2021.

A survey from 2014 identified the medieval and early modern buildings of the municipality and the names and trades of members of the medieval community. The collection consists of three archaeological artefacts: a 15th-century funerary stele, found in Praça de São Pedro, with a six-pointed star in low relief; a civil inscription on a lintel; and the inscription from the portal of the Gouveia synagogue, from the late 15th century, which is rare because it is complete and in Hebrew. It is complemented by maps, graphics, tables and replicas of documents.

The house is the starting point for exploring the Jewish heritage of the area: the visit includes a route through the Bairro da Biqueira, a former medieval Jewish quarter, and there are itineraries in Gouveia, Melo, Nabainhos, Nabais and Folgosinho.
