About the museum
The museum is housed in the Solar dos Condes de Vinhó e Almedina, a building erected in the 18th century by António Pinheiro de Almeida Castelo-Branco and Bernarda Margarida Nogueira de Brito, the first lords of the Casa do Toural. At the start of the 20th century it belonged to the Counts of Vinhó and Almedina. In 1981 the municipality acquired the property to house the public library and a general municipal museum.
In 1983 a retrospective of the work of the painter Abel Manta was held, the first step towards a museum of modern art. The Abel Manta Municipal Museum of Modern Art opened on 17 February 1985 on the first floor and took over the whole building after the library moved out in September 1995. The core of the collection comes from a donation by João Abel Manta, the painter's son, in 1985, supplemented by a second donation of graphic works in 2001.
The collection brings together painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking by Portuguese artists of the 20th century, from the first modernists to the 1980s, with emphasis on Abel Manta. Artists represented include Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Júlio Pomar, Paula Rego, Dórdio Gomes and Sara Afonso. Since 2007 the museum has run the Abel Manta Painting Prize, and its winning works join the collection.
