About the museum
The Casa Vergílio Ferreira – Para Sempre is located in Melo, the birthplace of the writer Vergílio Ferreira, in the municipality of Gouveia. It occupies the former Villa Josephine, a house that inspired the imaginary world of the novel “Para Sempre” and its epistolary sequel, “Cartas a Sandra”. It opened to the public on 3 October 2024 and is the municipality's most recent cultural facility.
The museum space aims to make known the life and work of the writer and to create an emotional connection with the interior and exterior spaces of the house. Its mission is to publicise and preserve his literary, aesthetic and philosophical legacy in Portugal and abroad, emphasising the importance of Melo and the Serra da Estrela landscape in his writing.
The entire second floor is an artist residency, where creators from various disciplines can develop projects and take part in initiatives with the local community. The programme includes guided tours, temporary exhibitions, an education service, literary fellowships and talks with guest speakers.
