About the museum
The Casa do Infante was built in 1325 and takes its name from the tradition that Infante D. Henrique, known as Henry the Navigator, was born here. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city and was also one of the largest, above all because of the two towers built in the 14th century, which disappeared long ago.
Over the centuries the national monument served various functions: it was a residence for official visits of the royal household, and the seat of the former Customs House of Porto and the Mint, which occupied it for several centuries.
In the nineties the house was restored, and archaeological excavations revealed traces of modern, medieval and Roman occupation. Mosaic floors and other finds indicate that the site was the house, or mansion, of a wealthy citizen in Roman times. Alongside the permanent exhibitions and the Archive, the Gabinete do Tempo, opened in 2020, presents a cycle of exhibitions on episodes and perspectives of the city's chronology. The Casa do Infante is one of the stations of the Museu do Porto.
