About the museum
The Casa dos Nichos is a 15th-century building, considered the oldest in the historic centre of Viana do Castelo, which has been restored to house an exhibition area devoted to the archaeology of the municipality. It operates as an archaeology museum unit and as an educational extension of the municipal museum.
The exhibition brings together the most significant archaeological heritage of the municipality, documenting the occupation of this territory from prehistory to the 16th century, with emphasis on the Iron Age and Romanisation. Sites represented include the citânia (fortified Iron Age settlement) of Santa Luzia, the medieval tombs of Santa Maria de Geraz do Lima and the rock engravings of Carreço.
The unit has a strong educational and inclusive focus. Visitors have multimedia resources to access information on the municipality's heritage, and free teaching materials are available. Guided visits and educational activities are held by appointment for children, young people, adults, seniors and people with special needs.
