About the museum
The Museu de Carros de Cavalos is at the Quinta da Bouça, in Santa Leocádia de Geraz do Lima, in a building beside an 18th-century manor house. The collection was assembled by the physician Lopo de Carvalho, a great enthusiast of carriages, who began with a gig given to him by his grandfather and went on adding vehicles until his death. His widow later opened the museum to the public.
The collection holds more than 50 animal-drawn vehicles, most of them from the 19th century: pleasure carriages, family gigs, hunting vehicles and public transport carts, from several countries, many of them restored. There is also a large collection of saddles, harnesses and other objects related to the horse.
Among the pieces mentioned are a twelve-spring head phaeton built by the Parisian firm Labourdette & Frères, owned by Afonso de Bragança, Duke of Porto, and a five-glass landau. The museum is private, and visits are by advance booking.
