About the museum

The Museu Marítimo de Esposende occupies the former Estação de Socorros a Náufragos (Shipwreck Rescue Station), the Casa do Salva-Vidas (Lifesavers' House), built in 1906 and regarded as a symbol of the town and of the municipality's seafaring and fishing community. The project came from the Forum Esposendense, a civic association founded in 1989, which negotiated with the Navy the partial transfer of the then-unused building and promoted its rehabilitation. The museum opened to the public in 2012.

Between 2008 and 2012 about 500 pieces and documents on the municipality's maritime activity were gathered, dating back at least to the 15th century. The first exhibition was called “Do Rio ao Mar Largo – A gesta Esposendense” (From the River to the Open Sea – The Epic of Esposende). The museum is also able to conserve and restore pieces and documents.

The exhibition room brings together objects related to the merchant navy and to pilots, ship models, sacred art of seafaring devotion and costumes, illustrating fishing, agro-maritime life and shipbuilding. In the Torre da Memória (Memory Tower) there is a photographic collection of the registered seamen of the Esposende maritime delegation between 1893 and 1962, and from the top one can see the Cávado estuary, the sea and the town. Since 2013 the museum has been part of the Rede de Museus do Mar de Esposende (Esposende Sea Museums Network).
