About the museum
The Museu da Fábrica do Chocolate is housed in the building of one of Portugal's oldest chocolate factories, which produced chocolate in Viana do Castelo for 90 years. In 2014 the building was restored and now combines a hotel, a museum, a chocolate shop, a chocotherapy office and an escape room.
The museum occupies the entire basement, about 500 m², divided into five spaces linked in a circuit. The visit traces the origin of cacao, the first civilisations that valued it (the Maya, Aztecs and Olmecs) and its arrival in Europe, in a 3D film about Hernán Cortés. There are interactive screens, information on the regions where the cacao tree grows, on the nutritional values of chocolate and on the living conditions of the producing communities, and a small chocolate factory where visitors interact with the machines and receive a chocolate at the end.
The museum is also used for study visits, with content on natural sciences, geography, history, technology and nutrition.
