About the museum

The Casa-Museu Afonso Lopes Vieira occupies the first floor of the poet's former residence in São Pedro de Moel, by the sea. The house was given to the couple, Afonso Lopes Vieira and his wife Helena Aboim, as a wedding gift by the poet's father in 1902. They lived there for long periods, especially from April to October, alternating with the houses in Cortes and Lisbon. The poet called it the “Casa-Nau”, wrote much of his work there and received important figures from the arts and letters of the early 20th century.

The house contains decorative elements applied by the poet, mainly stone plaques and tiles alluding to his works, and a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Fátima, inaugurated on 12 August 1929. In his will of 1938 he left the house to the Câmara Municipal da Marinha Grande, to be used as a children's seaside holiday colony, which has been the case since 1949 on the ground floor and in the annexes.

Visitors find the estate displayed as faithfully as possible to the way the poet left it, with personal objects and examples of his work, as well as temporary exhibitions on the life and work of the writer. The municipal museums of Marinha Grande are closed to the public for rehabilitation works following the damage caused by storm Kristin.
