About the museum

The Agromuseu Municipal D. Julinha is housed in the former Casa Agrícola Pereira Alves de Matos Carreira, in the parish of Ortigosa, one of the major farm estates of the region since the late 19th century and a landmark of local rural history. D. Maria Leonilde, known as Dona Julinha, donated part of the estate's property to the Leiria City Council.

The museum project began on 11 June 2002, with the restoration and adaptation of the farm buildings and annexes, in order to preserve them. The museum's mission is the preservation and promotion of rural heritage, through the conservation and interpretation of traces linked to wine-growing, cereals, olive oil, livestock and forestry.

Besides the educational kitchen garden, the museum keeps animals that were used in farm work, for food or for leisure, which makes it a living museum. Its programme goes beyond exhibitions and includes educational workshops, guided tours, intergenerational projects and partnerships with national and international institutions, with the aim of raising awareness of rural life, the environment and sustainable practices.
