About the museum
The m|i|mo is dedicated to the technical and artistic history of pre-cinema, photography and cinema, and works on collecting, safeguarding, conserving and inventorying objects and techniques linked to moving images. It was created in 1996, on the occasion of the 100 years of cinema in Portugal, under the name Museu da Imagem, in a space in the Teatro José Lúcio da Silva. It grew quickly and in 1999 adopted its present name.
In 2010 it moved to the building it occupies today, next to the castle and the Church of São Pedro. This group of three volumes was once the stables of the Paços Reais (royal palace) and the Celeiro da Mitra, the episcopal granary built after the creation of the diocese of Leiria in 1545.
The museum has spaces for temporary exhibitions, lends some documents and allows the collection to be seen in the reserve. In the Oficina do Olhar it is possible to find and handle reproductions of objects linked to the first experiments with moving images, which help to understand the importance of physics and mechanics in reproducing continuous movement. The Centro de Documentação e Informação Artur Avelar pays tribute to a native of Leiria who devoted 40 years to his passion for cinema and holds more than 300,000 items of documents, books and audiovisual material. The museum has been accredited by the Rede Portuguesa de Museus since 2010.
