About the museum
The Museu de Leiria has been housed in the former Convento de Santo Agostinho in Leiria since 2015. Its collection brings together the holdings of the former museum, the municipal art collections and the archaeological reserve, and presents itself as an open window onto the memory of a territory inhabited for a very long time.
The visit is divided into two main exhibition spaces. The first hosts the permanent exhibition, which offers a broad reading of the history of the territory through objects, events and myths. The second is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, which explore specific themes and collections; among the most prominent was “Plasticidade – Uma História dos Plásticos em Portugal” (Plasticity – A History of Plastics in Portugal), made with items loaned by private individuals, museums, research centres and companies.
The museum has received several awards from the Associação Portuguesa de Museologia, including those for best museography work (2016) and for international project (2019), and the Silletto Prize of the European Museum of the Year Award (2017).
