About the museum
The Casa-Museu João Soares is a branch of the Fundação Mário Soares e Maria Barroso in Cortes, Leiria. It has operated since 1996 in a building donated by the Soares family and promotes cultural and educational activities linked to contemporary Portuguese history and to the life stories of João Lopes Soares, Mário Soares and Maria Barroso.
The permanent exhibition “Século XX Português: os Caminhos da Democracia – João Soares / Mário Soares” follows the main moments of the 20th century through photographs, posters and documents. The house also has a collection of museum pieces, mainly gifts received by Mário Soares during his public life, including works of art, decorations and the academic gowns of him and Maria Barroso, and it organises temporary exhibitions.
The space includes exhibition rooms, an auditorium, a technical reserve and the João Lopes Soares Library, with more than 25,000 titles. In the garden, designed by Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, there is an open-air amphitheatre and the car in which Mário Soares toured the country during election campaigns after the 25 April 1974 Revolution. The education service offers guided tours, workshops, reading promotion activities, performances and initiatives for seniors.
