About the museum

The Fundação Batalha de Aljubarrota began in 2002 the process of recovering and enhancing the São Jorge field, where the battle of 14 August 1385 was fought, and concluded that safeguarding the site required a centre that would present the event to the public in a rigorous and attractive way. With support from the Ministries of Culture and of National Defence, the former Military Museum was converted into the Interpretation Centre, which opened in 2008.

The building has a usable area of 1908 m². The exhibition occupies about 900 m² and is divided into sections devoted to the archaeology and memory of the site, to the political, social and economic context of the Crisis of 1383–1385, and to an auditorium for multimedia shows. The highlights include the archaeological trench, the bones of combatants bearing wounds, a tactile display of weapons, and the chronicles of Fernão Lopes, Ayala and Froissart.

The trail continues outside, across the former battlefield, with audio guides in eight languages and four chronotelescopes that place the visitor at moments of the combat. It includes the Capela de São Jorge, built by D. Nuno Álvares Pereira after the victory. By agreement, the centre is linked to the Mosteiro da Batalha (Batalha Monastery), raised in fulfilment of the vow of D. João I.
