About the museum
The Casa-Museu José Pedro is the second museum site in Sacavém linked to ceramics, after the Museu de Cerâmica de Sacavém. It opened in 2005 in the former home of the ceramicist José da Silva Pedro (born 1907), a native of Maceira in the municipality of Leiria, who worked for some forty years at the Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém as a modeller and sculptor.
On land he bought in 1939, José Pedro built in 1960 a house and a garden inspired by American models he had seen in a magazine. There he set up his “Museu Particular de Arte e Floricultura” (Private Museum of Art and Floriculture), where he showed his works and received visitors. He created small imaginary worlds there, such as the “Aldeia dos Cogumelos” (Mushroom Village) and the “Cidade das Formigas” (Ant City), and a plaster replica of Cologne Cathedral, which became his true trademark. The press took a long time to show interest in his work, and a report from 1967 called him “o homem do museu secreto” (the man of the secret museum).
The Municipality of Loures acquired the house to preserve the ceramic output the artist created over the last twenty years of his life, consisting mainly of houses and small earthenware figures, and to make known the figure of José da Silva Pedro, who became a notable personality in local history.
