About the museum
The Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Centro Ciência Viva opened in 1999 in the Parque das Nações, on the former site of Expo 98, in a building easily recognised by the large external volume of its main nave. It is part of the Ciência Viva network of centres, and it celebrates its anniversary on 25 July.
It is a science and technology centre that combines interactive exhibitions, scientific activities, workshops, programme cycles for families and schools, and outreach actions. The ticket gives access to the whole exhibition area and to some scientific activities, and a visit takes an average of one and a half hours.
One of the best-known exhibitions is “Explora”, a “true forest of natural phenomena” originally designed for the Exploratorium in San Francisco, with about 40 interactive modules spread over five thematic areas. The venue also has a shop, a café, event spaces and inclusive science modules for people with special needs.
