About the museum
The Sacavém Earthenware Factory was founded between 1858 and 1859 by Manuel Joaquim Afonso, a glass and ceramics manufacturer in Marinha Grande and Lisbon. It was under successive English owners that the factory established itself on the national and international ceramics scene, especially throughout the 20th century. After a period of decline, it was declared bankrupt in 1994.
The museum opened on 7 July 2000, in a building constructed from scratch on the former grounds of the factory. It seeks to promote, safeguard and disseminate the legacy of the factory, in connection with the industrialisation of the municipality of Loures, and it approaches local history through industrial heritage and the people who worked there.
The space includes two exhibition rooms, the Forno 18 kiln, a remarkable example of kiln architecture, an auditorium for 80 people and the Manuel Joaquim Afonso Documentation Centre, which holds archives of the Loures factories. There is also a shop and access for people with reduced mobility.
