About the museum
The Casa de José Régio, on the avenue that now bears the poet's name, has belonged to his father's side of the family since it was built. In 1928, on the death of his godmother Libânia, it passed to José Régio's father and later to the writer himself. In the 1960s, after retiring and returning from Portalegre to Vila do Conde, Régio carried out the last major intervention there, adapting the house to his tastes and needs and bringing with him some of the best pieces of his collection of folk and religious art.
The poet died on 22 December 1969. After negotiations with the family, the Vila do Conde municipal council bought the house and opened it to the public on 17 September 1975, the day Régio would have turned 74. The house is not a conventional museum space: the objects remain arranged as the poet conceived them. Only the modern painting room was organised, at Régio's request, by his brother Júlio, who was also an artist.
In 2005 the council carried out works to ensure the stability of the building and the conservation of the collection. In the neighbouring house, the former residence of the housekeeper Benilde, the Centro de Estudos Regianos (Régio Studies Centre) and support services were set up, with a reception, a temporary exhibition room and an auditorium. The Casa de José Régio is part of the Museu de Vila do Conde.
