About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Etnografia e História da Póvoa de Varzim was founded in 1937 by António dos Santos Graça, a scholar of the Póvoa fishing community, who wanted to record traditions and practices at risk of disappearing. After the Exposição Regional de Pesca Marítima (Regional Sea Fishing Exhibition) of 1936, it was installed in the Solar dos Carneiros, an armorial house rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. The municipality acquired the building in 1974, and the property was classified as a site of public interest in 1986.
Over the years the museum took in collections already owned by the council, such as the faience and furniture that came from Rocha Peixoto, the former regional museum of the Club Naval Povoense, archaeological pieces and Roman inscriptions from Beiriz. It closed for works in the 1970s and reopened in 1985. At that time rooms were reconstructed with miniature scenes of Póvoa life and a traditional kitchen. The exhibition As Siglas Poveiras (The Poveiro Signs) received a European prize in 1980.
In 1997 the archaeology section opened, showing the results of excavations in the municipality, notably at Beiriz, the Cividade de Terroso, Vila Mendo Estela and Rates. The museum joined the Rede Portuguesa de Museus in 2001 and, in 2004, created two branches outside the main building: the Núcleo Arqueológico da Cividade de Terroso, an interpretation centre for an Iron Age hillfort settlement (castro), and the Núcleo Museológico da Igreja Românica de São Pedro de Rates.
